The first chapter of The Bedford Book of Genres is about the different types of things that have to do with writing. Basically, its talking about how there are lots of parts to a piece of writing that go together to create the essay as a whole. As a student, I feel like this chapter is like a refresher in case if I forgot anything over the years. It talks about genre and how they change according to how people decide to use them. The text makes connections to old memoirs and I felt like that was pretty cool. One thing I found kind of interesting about this chapter was that writing papers aren’t always for academic purposes and some people like to write about their experiences. Another thing the chapter reminded me of is Rhetoric and how there are different rhetorical appeals. The ones we already know are Ethos Pathos and Logos. These basically decide on what type of writing the author is going to use to get whatever point across. Personally, I like to use whatever feels right when I write. I guess you could say that it’s a mix and I don’t decide to stick to one type of rhetorical appeal when I write.
